Ebook About Raechel Anne Jolie’s early life in a working-class Cleveland exurb was full of race cars, Budweiser-drinking men covered in car grease, and the women who loved them. After her father came home from his third-shift job, took the garbage out to the curb and was hit by a drunk driver, her life changed. Raechel and her mother struggled for money: they were evicted, went days without utilities, and took their trauma out on one another. Raechel escaped to the progressive suburbs of Cleveland Heights, leaving the tractors and ranch-style homes home in favor of a city with vintage marquees, music clubs, and people who talked about big ideas. It was the early 90s, full of Nirvana songs and chokers, flannel shirts and cut-off jean shorts, lesbian witches and local coffee shops. Rust Belt Femme is the story of how these twin foundations—rural Ohio poverty and alternative 90s culture—made Raechel into who she is today: a queer femme with PTSD and a deep love of the Midwest.Book Rust Belt Femme Review :
Rust Belt Femme by Raechel Anne Jolie is a vivid story of the rural Ohio community of Valley View and the life of families in this poor, farm and working class community. My grandparents' home was also on Tinkers Creek, and my mother and her many siblings grew up there, too. They had homes and businesses where Jolie's childhood was rooted. Reading Jolie's memoir was like walking back to the landscape of my childhood memories of throwing rocks in the crick, picking up sacks of animal feed at Wilson's Mill, watching my grandfather sell his Christmas trees, and seeing season after season of the muddy flooded confluence of the Erie Canal and Tinkers Creek. What happened with her parents are the stories I heard after I left home and came back for visits. While I couldn't directly relate to the punk, queer scenes in Cleveland - I left Ohio to go overseas during the Vietnam War era - I was hooked with Jolie's discussions of poverty, family dysfunction, and working mothers who tried to raise their children out of the Rust Belt despair. I immediately read the book straight through and in the morning called my mother to share the what were our community connections with Jolie. Well done. As someone who also has c-PTSD, every chapter made me feel "seen," and reminded me to love my own journey. Subjectively, this book reads similarly the way a person with trauma's mind works; constantly being pulled out of the moment and re-living their story. The author shares her truth of the wounded child/adolescent who survived, and also shares the perspective of a wise sage with understanding, respect and beauty for all that happened. This oscillation between her inner child, and the trauma-informed badass who turns tears into nourishment, kept me in awe (and barely able to put it down; without exaggeration, I could barely put it down before devouring it). That same juxtaposition of healing and healed; had me crying and laughing throughout. Also, remarkably written (like clear; yet poetic); amazing music references; and just a fun time period piece for anyone who was born in the 80s. I've never read a book that I thought should be made into a movie, but I pray I see "Rust Belt Femme" on a marquis someday.
