Bought this as a gift for my husband Harold. He lived through the tornado. He was a junior in high school. The book brought so many details of that day back. So many stories that no one has told before. A day no one will forget. Can't believe its been 50 years. This is a very well written book. The author did a wonderful job with gathering the facts of the tornado and its aftermath, and also with the depth of his interviews. The reader gets a great sense of what the victims saw, heard, felt and smelled during that harrowing day and the days afterward, but more importantly, feels real compassion for all of the victims of a tornado that from all accounts took its victims completely by surprise. The author emphasizes the fact that although this took place in 1967, relatively recent history when you think about it, the ability of meteorologists to pinpoint and track the tornado was limited, as was the system of communications in place during this time. From what I understand the tornado approached Belvidere so quickly, that no actual photographic images exist. However, the verbal descriptions are so vivid, that the reader can "see" the tornado in his mind. Very well done.
